Spanning Over Three Fields

The Heritage Studies program brings together research and knowledge from various fields related to heritage preservation, with the aim of training future experts in cultural and natural heritage preservation.

Heritage Studies covers a vast field: from cultural heritage to natural heritage, as well as cultural landscapes. Within this field, the students will choose a particular area to focus on and research. If you have already decided an area to focus on, that is great. Or maybe you have a hard time deciding what to focus on?

Please do not worry. To support your studies and research, the Heritage Studies program covers three fields (Global Heritage Studies / Theory and Conservation / Management and Planning), in order to give you comprehensive knowledge about World Heritage theory and practice and, after graduating, to connect you to your future career.

Global Heritage Studies

“Sapientia sola libertas est (only wisom is freedom)”

The field of International Heritage Studies has a unique curriculum that encourages students to pursue academic perspectives on heritage beyond the distinction between cultural and natural heritage and tangible and intangible heritage. Thinking of heritage in a global, national, regional, and local context, the curriculum is organized with a focus on diversifying heritage studies. The importance is also placed on “international” learning and makes this curriculum suitable for students who want to study abroad while enrolled in graduate school, for those who are interested in European heritage, and for those who are interested in international organizations and the cooperation between national and regional institutions. For some of the lectures, we invite faculty members from universities in Germany (BTU) and Australia (Deakin University). One of the characteristics of the curriculum is that students have the opportunity to get out of the university and do fieldwork during excursions in Japan or even overseas. The atmosphere is very open and casual, so students will naturally strengthen their discussion skills and develop their own academic ideas.

“Sapientia sola libertas est (Only wisdom is freedom)”

There are as many ways of thinking as languages in the global, and as a wide range of biodiversities as livings on the planet. Let us enjoy building academic knowledge together, without fear of change!

Regarding the Long-term Study System

Some courses in the Graduate School of Human Sciences have introduced a long-term study system.
The long-term study system is to expand the learning opportunities of people who want to study while engaging in occupations, etc. If you would like to enroll in an education course over a period of time, it is a system that allows you to take a planned course.
The applicant is a person who has difficulty completing the course within the normal period of study because of the limited number of units that can be acquired per year compared to students who are enrolled in the regular training period, due to outside work.
And in completing the course, the students who wish to set up a course of study in advance are subject to a plan. “Regarding the handling of long-term study in the Graduate School of Human Sciences” (* 1), if you are a student who is a member of this program and you would like to apply for this system, please contact your supervisor and make your request.
To apply, please download the application form from (* 1) and use it.
